When did Carnival begin?

Trinidad Carnival began in 1785, when the French settlers began to arrive. From observance of their masters, the slaves would mock and imitate them as if at the masked balls and parades, and dressed themselves similarly. Adorned with wigs, masks and long dresses, the slaves started their ‘Carnivale’ and danced all through the night. Carnival has since grown to become ‘The greatest Show on Earth’, a spectacle of colour on the streets, one huge street party, echoing with the sounds of sweet calypso and steelpan.
